Are the Romans back?

images images-1There is an uncanny resemblance between the new CIA’s chief Mike Pompeo (30 December 1963) and Gnaeus Pompeius (29 September 106 BC – 28 September 48 BC).

In Italian the name Pompey is written Cneo Pompeo. The father of Mike, Wayne Pompeo, is of Italian descent and given the rarity of such surname we may well think that he could be related to that ‘Pompey the Great’ who was defeated by Julius Caesar at Pharsalus in Central Greece on the 9th of August, 48 BC and then assassinated at Pelusium in Egypt where he had sought refuge. Pompey was a successful general fighting on the side of Democracy, having the backing of the Senate, while Caesar was a golpist general who had the support of the Roman plebeians, because of his extravagant life, his riches, his theatricality and luck.
